When it comes to keeping your hands warm, wearing the correct size of gloves or mittens really matters. If your gloves are too tight or narrow, they’ll restrict air circulation and blood flow, leaving you with chilly hands. But if your gloves are too big, they’ll let air in and also greatly reduce your dexterity.
Here’s a guide from KOMBI to help you choose the right size gloves while you’re at the store.
- Put on the gloves or mitts.
- Make a fist with one hand as though you were holding ski poles.
- With your other hand, pinch the gloves or mitts at the fingertips to make sure there’s a little extra room between the material and your fingers.
- Pinch the outer edge of the glove or mitt near your knuckles to make sure the insulation is not compressed.
With properly sized gloves or mitts, there should be about 1 cm of room at your fingertips and the side of your hand.

Get out a tape measure and measure the circumference of your hand at the knuckles, excluding your thumb, as shown in the diagram (1). Then measure the length of the inside of your hand, from the palm to the tip of your middle finger (2). Compare your measurements to the size chart to find the proper size.
